Eimac 75tl Single Triode AmplifierI love handcrafted items.... obviously, you say, as that is how I have chosen to produce my works. I bring this up because of the Eimac tubes. They are wonderful... in sound... and construction... and tales... tales? well, yes.. You have to place yourself in the early radio days. We had a war to fund development on a scale we only dream of today. A real war. One in which the world was involved. So the best and the brightest were working in radio. What they created is nothing short of astounding - true genius. But the big guys, RCA and Westinghouse, weren't delivering quality so much as they were delivering quantity. Enter Eitel and McCullough. They saw a chance to make a higher quality tube and they did. Handblown glass bulbs are a sign of the low production numbers and attention given to each piece. The anodes are tantalum! Their internal construction is the two dimensional approximation of the perfect structure - they are cylindrical and symmetrical. They are also very conservatively rated and built to last thousands of hours. In short, exactly what we want in an audio tube. There's a catch, right? Well, sort of. Due to their high internal anode resistances, the output transformers of traditional design have very limited bandwidth. However, my transformer winder came up with a radical idea and I was of course in agreement with trying it. It requires yet more expense in iron, but it achieves what is essentially the impossible - full bandwidth out of a high ratio transformer. I am very honored to be able to implement this new theory with Intact Audio. It not only works, but works with no sonic penalties. That is a rare feat. So I guess I should say a word or two about parts and topology. I use quite a few custom wound transformers in this one. Six are nickel. Six are amorphous. The signal path, you ask? DHT -> DHT -> OPT. That is all! In the case of this amplifier I chose the 112A directly heated triode as the driver tube for its wonderful midrange tone. The second DHT is of course the Eimac 75tl, and the OPT is the custom amorphous cored output transformer mentioned above. Startling transient ability and utter transparency are the results of this topology. This amplifier delivers what I call "the truth." oh, yes, did I mention bandwidth? -3dB below 10 Hertz.. yes, that is correct...
